This is a drawing of a Tapir, from the Guyana rainforest. Tapirs are large herbivorous mammals belonging to the family Tapiridae. They are very distinct with their unual features such as being similar in shape to a pig, with a short prehensile nose trunk. Tapirs inhabit jungle and forest regions of South and Central America and Southeast Asia. Tapirs were formerly present across North America, but became extinct in the region at the end of the late Pleistocene, around 12,000 years ago. There are four widely recognised species of Tapir, the Baird's Tapir (also called as the Central American tapir), South American tapir (also called the Brazilian tapir or lowland tapir), Mountain tapir (also called the woolly tapir, and the Malayan tapir (also called the Asian tapir, oriental tapir or the Indian tapir), all four species are all classified on the IUCN Red List as endangered or vulnerable. The closest relatives of the tapirs are the other odd-toed ungulates, which include the horses, wild asses, zebra and rhinoceroses.
