This is an original hand-drawn charcoal drawing of an African wild dog, also known as painted dogs. I entitled this drawing 'A moment in Selous' © As I drew this from an encounter with these rare beauties whilst in Selous, Tanzania. Drawn from the wild.

The African wild dog latin name is Lycaon pictus, and are also known as the painted dog or cape hunting dog, they are an endangered species with their population sadly decreasing. They are a wild canine native to sub-Saharan Africa, being the largest wild canine in Africa, very distinctive with their big gorgeous rounded ears. It is estimated that there are around 6,000 adults, including 1,400 mature adult individuals that are living in 39 subpopulations that are all threatened by habitat fragmentation, human persecution and outbreaks of disease. As the largest subpopulation comprises fewer than 250 individuals, the African Wild dog has been listed as endangered on the IUCN Rd List since 1990.

I have been very fortunate to have had the pleasure of seeing these in the wild, as I mentioned above. This is one of the twenty-one that we saw whilst we were in Tanzania. It is exciting when spotting any wildlife/birdlife in the wild but each one of us felt a privilege seeing these rare wild dogs.

There is another Arican wild dog available, which is a close up of a pup which I have been fortunate to get permission to draw by renoun international photographer from Daryl Balflour. We have been fortunate to have had joined him on a couple of his safaris, highly recommend joining any of his trips.
